Cenedl mewn Cân

The aim of Cenedl Mewn Cân (Nation in Song) is to create a list of 10 songs that represent the Welsh language and culture; which will be used to raise international awareness of ‘The Wales Way’ when the time is right to do so.

Although Wales' beautiful landscape is world famous, there is a need to continue to raise awareness of Welsh culture and language - and what better way to do this than through music. Last year, musician Siân James; DJ, producer and presenter Dyl Mei; sports reporter Dylan Ebenezer; Nia Daniel from the National Library of Wales; Meurig Jones from Portmeirion and presenter Lisa Gwilym faced the very difficult task of creating a list of 25 songs, and we asked for your help to choose your top 10 to represent Wales. We would like to thank every single one of you for voting – this was not an easy task!

Here's the video that we used to launch the Cenedl mewn Cân project.

The voting period has now closed which means that the top 10 songs that will be used to represent Wales in the future have been chosen.

On Sunday, 21st February (UNESCO’s International Mother Language Day) we released a very special video of secondary school pupils from Wales, Dubai and Patagonia, and well-known artists: Bryn Fôn, Mared Williams, Cleif Harpwood and Eadyth Crawford, co-singing to one of the top 10 songs chosen by the public. Ysbryd y Nos by Cleif Harpwood and Hefin Williams was victorious, and Osian Huw Williams of Candelas was in charge of re-arranging the song.

Here’s the video of the song. Join the celebration and help us raise awareness of our beautiful language by sharing the video with your family and friends.
